Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 11

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes bio, cracy, demos, ego, and frater as well as the roots ag, agi, ig, act and aud.

PREFIXES

The prefix bio means "life". You have probably seen it in words such as biology and biography.

The prefix cracy means "rule". You no doubt recognize the word democracy.

The prefix demosNote: This prefix comes from Greek. means "people". So, a democracy is literally the rule of the people.

The prefix ego means "I" or "self". You should remember the psychological term superego.

The prefix frater means "brother". As you might know, universities often have several fraternity houses for male students located just off campus.

ROOTS

The root cept means "take" or "hold". If you follow American football, you recognize it in the word interception.

The root cid means "kill" or "cut". You have seen it in words like suicide and homicide.

The roots ag, agi, ig, and act all mean "do", "move" or "go". Do you recognize the words agenda, navigate and action?

The root aud means "hear" or "listen". We see this root in the words audio and auditorium.

Instructions: Using what you know about these roots and affixes and the context, determine the meaning of the following bold-faced words.

  8. The sentence "Tom and Mary got married" is ambiguous 😄 He speaks like a politician - indirectly and ambiguously.because it is not clear if they married each other or someone else. The inclusion of the word "both" as an antecedent would have cleared up the ambiguity.
  9. Leonard claimed that he is writing his autobiography😄 "Graph" means write or draw..
  10. Ms. Ito, what's on the agenda 😄 What will you do today? for me today? I want to get started right away.
